New York Fashion Week Spring 2011: Derek Lam

by Diana Ajih on September 14, 2010

in runway, runway beauty

Designer: Derek Lam

Inspiration: Sixties California Minimalism

Top Trends: minimalism, suede a-line skirt, linen denim looks in indigo, relaxed silhouettes, white gowns, print dresses, thin silk cashmere sweaters, high platform heels and sandals, neutral palette, snake skin theme accessories- saddle shoulder handbag

My Thoughts: He turned to West Coast for inspiration and I love the simple silhouettes, the clean lines, and the creamy neutral palette. I adored the accessories too especially the saddle bag in snake skin. I also gotta give credit to his all-white finale gowns. They were the perfect looks to end the show.

Backstage Beauty

Makeup: Tom Pecheux for Estée Lauder

Hair: Orlando Pita for T3

Nails: Jin Soon Choi for Estée Lauder

Top Looks

Makeup: “We wanted to play with color like we always do,” said Pecheux. “I love working with Derek; he’s really into fantasy, and I love breaking the rules.” He drew bright red-orange eyeliner on the upper lash line. A highlighter was used for the inner eyes and finished with black mascara. The lips stayed neutral and he set the cheeks with bronzer and Estee Lauder blush in Sweet Nectar.

Hair: To add lift and texture, Pita used volumizing spray and blew the hair dry. He gently massaged the crown of head to give it a slight messy finish.

Nails: Nails were simple with a golden/metallic shade.

Designer: Prabal Gurung

Inspiration: Minimal, futuristic look

Top Trends: bright color ensembles (bold yellow, oranges, and blues), 5 inches below the knee dresses and skirts, sexy cuts, narrow cocktail dress, opaque against sheer pieces, pencil skirts

My Thoughts: When I saw the opening look, I knew it was gonna be a good show. I just love the bright colors. I’m digging the futuristic glam and the cuts are true perfection. The collection was made for a strong and feminine woman who wants to show off her sexy side. He definitely experimented for spring and the end result…. fabulous! No wonder First Lady Michelle Obama is a fan.

Makeup: Tom Pecheux for MAC Cosmetics

Hair: Odile for Moroccan Oil

Nails: Jin Soon Choi for Sally Hansen

Top Looks

Makeup: “Futuristic. That was my interpretation of Prabal Gurung’s world, and he accepted it,” said lead makeup artist Tom Pecheux. Models had a clean face with a matte finish. To give a hint of shimmer to the eyes, Tom Pecheux used lots of pure white pigments- white liner and white eyeshadow.

Hair: A deep side part in the front for a sleek ponytail in the back. A silver barette was also used on the ponytail.

Nails: Jin Soon Choi created “line art” for the models using Sally Hansen’s nail polish for a simpler version of a moon manicure.

Designer: Alexander Wang

Inspiration: Construction theme, lightness

Top Trends: bandage jumpsuits, duck tape accents, semi-transparent knits, paint splatters, canvas carpenter jackets and pants, all-white looks, motorcycle jackets

My Thoughts: This collection is completely different from fall. Instead of dark shades, he lightened up with the focus on white with few pops of apricot and mint green. His collection was far from usual and I can’t say that I love it. I will say that it’s a different direction and I applaud him for taking a risk.

Makeup: Diane Kendal for MAC Cosmetics

Hair: Guido for Redken

Top Looks

Makeup: His inspiration is from punk skater girls. “It’s all about a downtown, urban and artsy feel,” said Kendal. Brows were covered with concealer to make it appear bleached. The face was well moisturized and glowing.

Hair: 80′s punk was the hair theme. Hair was knotted up into what looks like dreadlocks with white clay dipped into the hair resembling paint.

Designer: Z Spoke by Zac Posen

Inspiration: Young, hip, and cartoon-y

Top Trends: eclectic colors, fruity prints, denim jeans and blazers, lean cotton suits, high platform heels and boots, print dresses with fringe, glam eyewear, colorful chic handbags

My Thoughts: Wow this collection is totally different but in a good way. It’s very fun and wacky with a play on cartoon-esque outfits, bright colors, and fruity prints. Definitely for the young and trendy shopper.

Backstage Beauty

Makeup: Charlotte Willer for Maybelline New York

Hair: Odile Gilbert using Got 2 Be products

Nails: OPI

Top Looks

Makeup : “Zac said he was channeling the theater and street performers, so we went with something definitely dramatic,” said Willer. So Willer used pink blush on the cheeks and black mascara. There were three different looks as well. The “lead look” had a gold, copperish hue on the eyes with cherry lips. The other two looks used an intense yellow pigment on the eyes with hot pink lips or blue and green eyes with hot orange pout.

Hair: Masses of curls tied back in either a french twist, top knot, or ponytail.

Nails: Long, oval press-ons in a vibrant leopard print or tie-dye.

Designer: Cynthia Rowley

Inspiration: A flirty collection with a playful use of circles.

Top Trends: graphic polka dot cut outs, boyish tops and trousers, cabachon buttons on dresses, skirts, and pants, tailored sheath dresses, citrus colors against neutral colors in solid and sheer pieces, large glossy barettes

My Thoughts: The collection was very cohesive and I like how she plays with circles on the skirts and dresses.  Flirty plus retro rocks!

Backstage Beauty

Makeup: Val Garland for MAC Cosmetics

Hair: Bok-hee for the Antonio Prieto Salon; Aura Friedman for Wella

Top Looks

Makeup: Cynthia’s aim was “Carnaby Street, Mary Quant, and Twiggy”  and Garland for MAC, took that response and gave it a modern twist using heavy mascara on the bottom lashes and a bold lip.

Hair: Bok-Hee and the Antonio Prieto Salon styling team were on hand backstage creating shiny, sleek and tight, structured updos that incorporated iridescent metallic hair extensions hand-painted by Aura Friedman and the Wella Professionals color team.  The bright clips styled into the updo gave the final hair look a modern street style with a hint of polished glam.
