We love it when designers venture into scent projects because the process is different than putting together a designer collection. Dolce & Gabbana has released a new fragrance line called The Velvet Collection. This limited-edition set features six fragrances and each one touches on the heritages of Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana.
“Dolce & Gabbana’s Velvet Collection revisits the splendour of vintage Italian ingredients and derives its name from the precious texture of a fabric laden with timeless perfection and modern possibility.”
“Velvet: a material with a duel personality, luxurious but also simple, noble put also humble… this duality is at the heart of what we do.”
These six scents include ingredients such as neroli, gardenia, patchouli, tuberose, benzoin, frangipani, vetiver, and galbanum.
- Velvet Sublime- orange groves of Sicily
- Velvet Love- the carnations that grow in Lake Como
- Velvet Desire- the period of the Renaissance
- Velvet Vetiver- the scent of Mediterranean summer
- Velvet Wood- lacquered wood
- Velvet Patchouli- inspired by Stefano Gabbana’s first signature scent
Patchouli: the first fragrance I felt really belonged to me. It became my statement scent. -Stefano Gabbana
Vetiver: a tantalizing scent replete with elegance and classic perfection. I wore it as a boy to feel as an adult. -Domenico Dolce
I love the smell of Patchouli. It’s a must-have ingredient in my signature scent. The Velvet Collection is now available exclusively at Saks Fifth Avenue stores. Retails for $195 a piece.

This Week’s Craziest Beauty Invention: Swallowable Perfume
|
|
From rubber ear covers that prevent flatiron burns to suction cups that plump your lips, we thought we’ve seen the wackiest beauty inventions — until now
|
|
We love our perfume just as much as the next gal, but now we’re faced with an interesting dilemma: Would we swallow our go-to scent? A Dutch artist and a synthetic biologist came up with an ingestible capsule that releases fragrance from the inside out. See how this invention works so you can decide if you’ll pop the perfume pill.

Move over, Kim Kardashian! Taylor Swift is here to prove that you don’t need to ooze sex out of every pore — or squeeze yourself into a skin-tight gold foil dress, for that matter — to sell a celebrity-branded perfume. Yes, the 21-year-old country star is the latest famous face to come out with her own fragrance, and Taylor Swift’s Wonderstruck is all about making a stunning first impression, with both its evocative memory-creating scent and the star’s first-ever venture into the realm of beauty. In the ads, Taylor sports her signature princess-inspired gown, ruby red lips, lush curls, and authentically innocent expression we know and love her for, as if to prove that this fragrance is all her, uncompromised — no matter how much assistance she may have received from perfumer Olivier Gillotin. The scent itself, which has just launched at Sephora, incorporates notes of freesia, green tea, apple blossom, and dewberry for an enchanting yet comforting fragrance that’s meant to mimic that first rush you experience when you meet someone for the first time. But is its sweet and perky scent – paired with that ultra-glitzy purple and gold bottle – a little too much for the star’s first stab at in the fragrance game?

Here’s a sneak peek at Illamasqua Freak Eau de Parfum that’s launching in October 2011.
“Illamasqua is undoubtedly the most vibrant and fastest growing British make-up brand of this generation. When creating all the elements of this fragrance, from the scent to the bottle, the packaging to the image, the prime focus has been to deliver a groundbreaking concept that delivers an irresistible assault on the senses, whether you have heard of the Illamasqua brand or not. Freak by Illamasqua has succeeded on every point of that intention. Illamasqua make-up captures the essence of night-time transformations, unleashing your alter ego and celebrating self-expression. We have now managed, with great care, to distil that attitude into a fragrance and bottle it. It’s time to dress up and howl at the moon. Get your Freak on!” — Joseph Corre, Illamasqua Joint MD
Illamasqua Freak Eau de parfum has top notes of Black Davana, Opium Flower, and belladonna that charms the senses into unrestrainable lust and passion, heart notes of Poison Hemlock, Datura, and Queen of the Night, and base notes of Frankincense, Oud, and Myrrh, that obsessively captures the senses.
Along with the launch of Freak parfum, Illamasqua has also created a capsule collection featuring three limited edition products, whose shades reflect the rare blooms that make up this most exotic of scents.

- Pure Pigment in Queen of the Night (blackened plum)
- Sheer Lipgloss in Datura (neutral mauve)

Heidi Klum, known for her supermodel status and her hosting gig at Project Runway, is launching her first ever perfume called Shine. The scent include notes of mandarin, pear, and pink peppercorn at the top, Venzuelan Tonka bean, musk comone, and vanilla at the bottom, and sunflower, mimosa, and lily of the valley in between.
Here’s what Heidi told WWD about her fragrance: ”There are different moods that, as a fragrance creator, you can travel to.” “But for my first one, I wanted what I felt my staple would be. I wanted it to be sensual and feminine, but still luxurious and expensive-smelling — because I think there are so many perfumes out there that smell cheap and too sweet.”
I love the structured look of the bottle. Such an appealing bottle design.
She also has another fragrance, Summer Shine in the works. It’s scheduled to come out next year as well as another addition in 2013. Three fragrances within the next 2-3 years? Now that’s one smart business woman!
What do you think of the Heidi Klum parfum “Shine”?
