While beauty gurus typically advise against highlighting both your eyes and lips at the same time when choosing the focus of your evening makeup look (or any occasion’s makeup look for that matter), I can’t help but notice that this season’s night-out looks are all about drama, drama, drama — both with the eye-catching eye makeup and look-at-me lips at once. However, while models on the catalogs seem to be able to pull off the heavily-emphasized look without looking like a clown, somehow I’m still a little skeptical about how it will translate on a real gal’s face… especially considering my darker features, the hours I’ll be spending dancing, and of course, lighting not fit for a glamourous photo shoot. Luckily you don’t have to necessarily “go big or go home” (or rather, risk looking like a drag queen) in order to cash in on the benefits of rocking both dramatic eyes and bold lips. Consider a red lip stain instead of a more highly-concentrated lipstick or gloss, which will give you rich color that still wears more naturally and won’t clash. The great thing about lip stains is that they work with your natural lip tint and have buildable color — in other words, you can experiment gradually with added coats of product to create the perfect balance of luscious lips and come-hither eyes that doesn’t look overdone!

Finding the perfect red lip shade can be a nightmare but, keeping it in place is another challenge. Just look at the gorgeous Kerry Washington. She showed up at the Urban World Film’s Festival opening in N.Y.C. with well-defined fiery lips.
Q: How can I get my lips perfectly defined?
A: Easy! Just follow these 5 steps…
Step 1: Exfoliate! Soft lips is key for proper application so make sure you exfoliate beforehand and apply a nourishing lip balm for added protection.
Step 2: Use a lip liner slightly darker than your lip shade. Especially if you’re wearing a bright pout like red.
Step 3: Make sure your lip liner is sharp to achieve a finer line. Start at the middle and line towards the corners of your mouth.
Step 4: Grab a lip brush to apply lipstick or apply directly but, dot it on or use a circular motion. Also, use your brush to smooth out your liner after applying the lipstick.
Step 5: Wipe the corners of your lips with a napkin to get rid of any color on the edges and you’re done!
I hope you enjoyed my beauty tip of the week!

Want to feel sexy in red lipstick but feel it’s too intimidating? I hear ya! I usually would stay away from red lipstick because I always assumed that it’s not appealing on African-Americans. Well I recently learned that this is far from the truth. Scarlett red is in this holiday/winter season and if red lipstick is too daring for you, consider going the red lip gloss route.
Red lips has a classic appeal with a hint of drama. What I love most about a gloss is the range of formulas. If you’re looking for something that’s subtle, try a sheer formula or a richer gloss formula for added color.
Sexify your pout by checking out these hot red glosses!!
- Christian Dior’s Rouge Dior Creme de Gloss ($26)- A balance of lipstick and gloss with a hint of shimmer.
- Chanel Luminous Satin Lip Lacquer in Dragon ($32)- Berry red color for a more cool tone.
- Nars Lip Gloss in Bloodwork ($26)- Described as “red vinyl” that’s very opaque with a red blush-tone.
- Urban Decay XXX Shine Lip GLoss ($16)- A sheer candy apple red color. Seen in a Betsey Johnson show!
- Benetint ($28)- Not exactly a lip gloss. It’s a rosy red stain that can be used on the cheeks and on the lips. The color stays on for a long time.
- Purple Lab’s Huge Lips Skinny Hips Lip Gloss in Red Sole ($20)- A very sheer formula to add a hint of color to your pout
- Stila’s Lip Enamel in Joy ($22)- Give your lips some extra shine with this blue-based lip gloss!
