Soothe Winter Skin Freak-Outs With a Calming Serum

by Diana Ajih on February 2, 2012

in skin

If this cold, dry winter weather has not only gotten under your skin, but is seriously messing with your skin too, you’re not alone! Even not-so-sensitive skin is prone to winter freak-outs, whether you’re a victim of facial redness, puffiness, flakiness, or any variety of other sad cold-weather woes. But don’t fret – there’s a quick solution to soothe flustered skin during these extreme conditions, and a facial calming serum may become your new beauty savior through the winter, and possibly all year-round! If harsh weather conditions have your skin constantly irritated, try Philosophy’s Keep The Peace serum, which incorporates multiple antioxidants to serve as your knight in shining armor against environmental attack. Origins’ Dr. Weil Mega Mushroom Skin Relief takes protection a step further with anti-aging properties like Chaga and Pleurotus Mushrooms to slow visible signs of aging and make skin more resilient. If you’re more concerned with the damage that’s already been done, H2O Marine Calm Rescue Serum soothes the signs of irritation and dryness with witch hazel and yarrow extract, while Dr. Sebagh Rose de Vie Serum smoothes skin for a more supple appearance and feel with the help of organic rose hip oil for more healthy skin, no matter what the weather!

6 Winter Skin Care Tips For Weatherproofing Your Skin

Winter Skin Care Tips

With winter’s cold temperatures, our skin requires extra protection and comfort as well. Ole Henriksen, the skincare guru and founder of the OLEHENRIKSEN skincare line and the OLEHENRIKSEN Spa in Los Angeles, CA shares 6 easy winter skin care tips to weatherproof your skin during the cold  season.

1. When showering have the water temperature be pleasantly warm, but not hot. Hot water is very drying on skin.

2. Avoid using a body brush with sharp bristles in cold weather because it will strip your skin of its natural oils. For exfoliation, the key is to use a body scrub that thoroughly removes dead and dry skin cells, while leaving your skin feeling soft and hydrated, such as the OLEHENRIKSEN rub n’ buff salt scrub. Apply by wetting your entire body and then turn off your water. Massage the scrub into your skin in long, soothing, yet firm motions. By avoiding any running water during the activation of the scrub, you maintain the density of the formulation, while not wasting any product by seeing it run down the drain.

3. After showering, give your skin an added boost of moisture, by applying an extremely thin layer of a body oil, such as the OLEHENRIKSEN lavender body oil, prior to applying body lotion. It will add luminosity and ensure skin remains moist and nourished around the clock.

4. Your hands also require special attention in cold weather. At night, exfoliate hands with a scrub followed by an application of hand cream. It will leave your hands and cuticles feeling incredibly soft.

5. When you cleanse your skin, regardless of skin type, it is very important that you use luke warm water as opposed to hot water. That is the first step toward guarding your complexion against unnecessary dryness. Activating your cleanser with a soft, round flat vegetable sponge is a great way to gently eliminate any dead skin cells, and get circulation going. Avoid thick face clothes, since they don’t glide gracefully across the face and neck, and often have a coarse texture.

6. Using creams that contain higher concentrations of essential fatty acids is the best way to maintain a soft and glowing complexion in even the coldest of environments. Oils like sunflower seed, grapeseed, black currant, hazelnut, avocado, sesame, almond and wheat germ all have a high content of essential fatty acids and are known for their ability to comfort, soothe and protect skin. Fats do not freeze in cold weather, unlike water and water based extracts, so they will help maintain a velvety skin texture and prevent capillary breakage.

I hope you enjoyed these winter skin care tips!

Much-Needed Winter Skin Care For Snow Bunnies!

by Diana Ajih on December 9, 2010

in skin

While SPF and ultra-moisturizing skin care may be more commonly attributed to the warmer summer months where you spend more active time under the sun’s scorching rays, but believe it or not, your skin still needs plenty of TLC during the winter, too. In fact, with the winter’s cold drying air and the not-as-obvious sun exposure, your skin may be extra neglected during the colder months, meaning it needs more help than ever to stay nourished and healthy! As a result, I’ve rounded up some of the best winter-friendly (and all-year-round awesome) products to keep your skin in tip-top shape, rain, snow, or shine!

For one, it’s important to wear a daily SPF, like Clinique City Block Sheer, which doubles as a primer so you can wear it under makeup without it feeling oily or caked-on. Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean your skin isn’t exposed to regular sunlight — and if you’re a snowboarder especially, you know the feeling of a surprise sunburn by the end of the day! Similarly, keep lips protected and moisturized with a heavy-duty lip balm like Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm — this brand may usually cater to men, but it definitely does the trick! In cold weather when you’re skin is bound to be extra dry, it’s important to find a gentle cleanser that doesn’t skimp when it actually comes to getting clean — Avon Winter Solutions Cleanser gets the job done without drying out your skin further. For extra winter-time pampering, use a hydrating mask like Sisley Flower Gel Mask which tones and firms weather-stressed skin and leaves your face feeling fresh, clean, and moisturized. And finally, if you’re dealing with the after-effects of a little winter neglect, First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream helps soothe winter irritation and protects against further damage!

Save Your Skin From Winter Weather

by Diana Ajih on November 3, 2009

in skin

winter-skinThe cool days are officially starting, and here at Syracuse that means the cold days are just around the corner.  I can just feel the winter depression setting in, and my skin feels the same way.  My hands are already dry and eczema is surfacing.  Yeah, I think that definitely makes someone wanna hold my hand…if that someone also happens to have winter lizardy skin.

As if losing your summer bronze glow isn’t bad enough, the cold wind and weather does some serious damage to your skin. And your precious face and dainty hands get the worst of it, as they most often feel the harshness of the cold air. So how can you protect your skin without staying in your room all day? (No, that isn’t an option; professors don’t care about your skin that much.)

Below are some suggestions to get your skin back to the baby’s-bottom-soft feel of summer. No more cracking, flaking or drying out this winter, women.

Hands: If your skin is only mildly dry or you just want to prevent it from happening, a thick cream will do the trick.  Try L’Occitane’s Shea Butter Hand Cream or Bliss’ High Intensity Hand Cream. And keep that stuff with you wherever you go; skin dries out quickly in the winter-time and you want to be prepared.
