A Morning Self-Care Routine When You’re Stuck Indoors

Maintaining good mental health is always important but during these trying times, it may be more important than ever. You, your family, and everyone you know and love are all going through a new stress that our minds just aren’t designed to cope with.

Our entire lives have been turned on their heads and the future seems uncertain. It is times like these that stress just how important maintaining good mental health is and it all starts as soon as you wake up in the morning. I’ve put together a few tips to help you maintain your sanity and keep your spirits high first thing in the morning. This is my morning self-care routine for when you’re stuck indoors.

Wake Up Early

If you have kids consider waking up an hour before the kids will be getting up. This will give you some quiet time to yourself to enjoy a cup of coffee, maybe have a bath, or do something else that you find equally relaxing, so long as it isn’t staying in bed an extra hour. Whatever you do during that time it should not involve the internet. No news, no social media, no TV.

Get Some Fresh Air

Be it during your hour of peace or at some other point before you have to begin your workday get some fresh air. This might mean standing in your backyard or just hanging out of a window if that’s all you’ve got. But try to get 10-15 minutes of fresh air. It will help you feel more alert and refreshed. While you’re at it open up the windows in your bedroom and let the room get some fresh air for a few hours. If it’s cold outside then feel free to close off your bedroom from the rest of the house. This will help you sleep better at night.

Have a Piece of Fruit

add fruit in morning routine

Try to have at least one piece of fresh fruit each morning. The sugars in it will help you wake up and fruit is good for you! Apples and citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruits have a long shelf life so they’re good to stock up on. Alternatively, you could go with frozen fruit and have a smoothie or add it to your oatmeal in the morning.

Get Active

Do something that moves your body for at least 15 minutes and up to an hour. This is a great activity to get your kids involved with because they need to be active too. You can find free workout videos on Youtube that include yoga, high-intensity workouts, low-intensity workouts, and even those that are done seated for the elderly and disabled.

Have a Defined Start Time for Work and School

Finally, it is important to know exactly what time you’re going to start work and your kids are going to start their school work. Having this schedule means you know exactly what is expected of you and you won’t spend the morning stressing over the “when am I going to find the time for work?” question that clouds your thoughts.
