How I Turned My Skincare Routine Into a Self Care Ritual

May 19, 2020

self care ritual

Since spending more time at home, I’ve been walking around the house, makeup-free 24/7 and it’s phenomenal! We’re all living this quarantine life at the moment and honestly, it’s the perfect time to focus on improving “one-self” by practicing self-care as we adapt to our new normal. For me, my self-care ritual is heavily focused on my skin.

Now that I’m in my 30’s skincare is more important than ever. No matter how busy I am or hectic my work schedule is, taking care of my skin has always been a priority in my life. It’s an essential part of my self care. There’s a meditative aspect with a skincare routine. I’m standing there and taking 15-20 minutes, just for me. By having a set skincare routine, I know what to expect which is a huge relief to me.

The Importance of Self-Care

What does it really mean to practice self care especially now during these uncertain times? For me, it’s about recharging after a hectic day and reducing stress. It’s also understanding your self-worth and a reminder that taking care of “you” is just as important. It’s okay to make yourself the top priority in your life.

That’s why I took this time to put my skin first by switching out my current products with ones from For The Biome which are non-toxic, rejuvenating, healing and supports the microbiome of my skin. Let’s just say I wanted to give my skin a breather.

Why For The Biome Is My Go-To

for the biome products

Now that I’m spending more time at home, I thought it was the perfect opportunity to give my skin a break from harsh chemicals and use exclusively whole-ingredient skincare products.

For The Biome is based on a mind-body approach meaning that your skin is healthiest when everything is balanced. When our skin and microbiome are supported to do what they have evolved to do (protecting, hydrating, and adapting in face of stress), our skin is at its best.

I appreciate how dedicated they are to skin health using 100% active + whole ingredients designed to support our skin and microbiome. So for 14 days, I tried the Sentient Starter Set.

It comes with:

  • Empower Powder 2-in-1: A waterless cleanser and mask duo with a formula that unites 10 botanicals, 6 probiotic strains, and reishi mushroom for a potent prebiotic and hydrating experience. Their clinically studied aloe vera can increase skin hydration by 100% within one hour of applying it to your face.
  • Restore Essence Spray: A spray that protects the skin from pollution and acne-causing impurities. The formula features artisanally fermented Manuka and Swiss black bee honey.
  • Shield Face Serum: A serum with a multi-correctional formula that stands guard against free radicals. Its antioxidant capacity is more potent than the leading rosehip oil.
  • A Free Toolkit: It comes with a cleansing cloth, a mini bowl and spoon.

Here’s my new step-by-step daily skincare routine.

Step 1. A Meditative Skincare Regimen

These days I like to do guided meditations while applying my skincare products. It’s such a calming experience and it’s a nice escape from our current situation. It’s a great stress reliever and nice way to recharge after a hectic day of working too! For The Biome actually offers a 15-minute live meditation every Wednesday at 11:30 AM EST. Tune in if you’re in need of a little midweek stillness.

Step 2. Cleanse & Prime

While doing a guided meditation, I indulge with Empower Powder 2-in-1 Cleanser & Mask Duo. I love that it works as a cleanser and mask. The tool kit that came with the set makes it so easy to mix the powder and water together so I can apply it on my face. It’s a great exfoliator that’s not too harsh on the skin. At night, I use it as a mask to get an extra boost of hydration. My face feels so soft afterwards.

Step 3. Tone & Hydrate

I love the Restore Essence Spray. I lightly spray it on a fresh face and neck for daily pollution protection and hydration. Whenever I feel my skin needs a boost, I reach for this every single time. I can smell a hint of honey with each spritz and love the cooling mist sensation when it hits my skin.

Step 4. Moisturize

The Shield Face Serum moisturizes my skin without leaving it feeling greasy. I like to go slow and massage it on for a few minutes as it absorbs into my skin. This step is the perfect time in your routine to connect to your skin and be mindful. I always feel amazing plus my skin is super hydrated afterwards.
