Purchasing flowers can be a bit pricey especially during the holidays like Valentine’s Day or Mother’s Day so, of course you want to get the most use out of it and keep them fresh as long as possible in your home.

If you’re looking for a way to make your favorite flowers bloom vibrantly and stay fresh a bit longer,  you’ll want to try this neat trick I started using on all my flowers to extend their lifespan by a few days.

Step 1. First remove the leaves below the water line and cut stems at an angle under running water.

Step 2. Fill the vase with warm water so the stems can  absorb it more easily (make sure the vase is clean before filling with water).

Step 3. Add 1/4 can of a non diet lemon/lime soda like Sprite or 7up. I learned that the citric acid in lemon/lime soda helps kill bacteria and sugar may help “feed” the flower petals.

I first learned of this trick in Good Housekeeping magazine and I’ve been using this technique ever since. Trust me, you’ll get blooms for days!
